Melissa A. Smith is a casting director and owner of Melissa A. Smith Casting Inc. and MAS Acting Studios in Sudbury. Melissa was named one of Playback Magazine’s 5 To Watch in 2016. She is a member in good standing of the Casting Directors Society of Canada. Originally from Sudbury, Ont., Melissa received her start in the industry as an actor. After graduating from Sudbury Secondary School, Melissa was invited to Toronto to work in the casting office for the Showcase series “King.” Melissa trained with two of Canada’s top casting directors before branching off and opening Melissa A. Smith Casting Inc. in 2013. Melissa’s credits include: “Cardinal,” Seasons 1, 2 and 3; “Indian Horse,” “Bad Blood,” “Letterkenny,” “What Would Sal Do?,” “Away From
Everywhere” and “Two Lovers and a Bear.” In 2014, Melissa returned home to Sudbury opened MAS Acting Studios. The studio is a training facility and testing ground for local talent.
Q: What’s the number one thing you are working toward that you haven’t yet accomplished?
A: I have a wish-list of directors and producers that I would love to have an opportunity to work with. We are also working toward expanding our MAS Acting Studios operations in Toronto and aim to have our location up and running in 2020.
Q: What is the biggest obstacle you’ve overcome?
A: Being taken seriously as a young entrepreneur has always been a challenge. I work hard to prove myself and my qualifications in a very competitive industry.

A: Italian food, sand beaches and my family

Q: What is the most rewarding part of your job?
A: Everything! I am so grateful to wake up every day and do what I love. I am surrounded by incredible individuals who inspire me with their dedication and passion. Watching people work hard to achieve their dreams and being a small part of their success, whether through casting or training, is very rewarding.
