Michelle Walker, 37, is the manager of conference services for Nipissing
University. The Ryerson graduate majored in Marketing and holds a
Bachelor of Business Management degree. Her job is to enhance the image
and profile of the university as a conference destination, community partner
and leading educational institution.
Q: What
is your greatest accomplishment?
A: It would be the relationships
I've built with the local tourism
industry and community partners.
The university's residence and
conference services department
is a valued member of the tourism
community. Building strong
partnerships and working together
have contributed to the success of
tourism in North Bay. We are able
to offer facilities and services that
assist the city and tourism industry
in attracting large events, such as
the 2005 Provincial Harley Owners
Group (HOG) Rally hosted on
campus, which brought in more
than 1,200 visitors to the city.
Q: Who is your most valued mentor?
A: Aside from my education, my best
on-the-job learning experience was
under my first boss's leadership.
I was able to practise business
management tools and develop my
skills. Her exemplary management
and leadership practices were an
excellent example. She's made me
continuously think, "How can we do
that better?"
Q: What do you love most about North Bay
and area ?
A: I moved up here from Toronto in
2003, so I have an appreciation for
fresh air and green surroundings.
We are very fortunate to live in such
a nice environment.
Q: What else would you like to
accomplish?
A: I'm getting married this year, and my
fiancé and I look forward to having
a family. Professionally, one day I
would like to start my own business.
