Holly Ann Garnett, 21, is studying History, Political Science, and French at
Nipissing University. She had an impressive student record at St. Joseph-
Scollard Hall, and was named Student of the Year (2006). She is also a
gifted musician.
Q: What
is your greatest accomplishment?
A: I spent a semester as a Killam
Fellow at Cornell University, in
Ithaca, New York, in the winter of
2009...My knowledge of the roots
of America's political system was
certainly expanded. I was proud to
share Canadian culture, including
our unique political system, with
my peers and professors. I had
the opportunity to attend many
special lectures and events with
guests from around the world.
The highlights included watching
President Obama's inauguration
with several thousand of my peers,
and performing a Canadian piece at
Cornell's Spring Piano Concert.
Q: Who is your most valued mentor?
A: Nipissing University Political
Science professor Dr. David
Tabachnick has inspired and
challenged me. He has been
extremely supportive of student
political initiatives. Most importantly,
he encouraged me to apply for a
Killam Fellowship.
Q: What do you love most about North Bay
and area ?
A: I love Nipissing University. I think that
student-faculty interaction is definitely
one of Nipissing's strongest assets. I
love the "open door" policy at Nipissing.
Q: What else would you like to
accomplish?
A: Since witnessing the inner workings
of government first-hand as a page
in the Ontario legislature in 2002,
I have strived for a career dealing
with politics. My future goals include
political research in an academic,
party or government setting. I also
hope to run for political office.
