Sara Kunto (LLB) is the university secretary and general counsel at Laurentian University. Fluently bilingual, she attended Laurentian University for her undergraduate studies in geography and psychology. She studied law at the University of Ottawa and was called to the bar in 2006.
Q: What motivates you?
A: The Laurentian team and the volunteers who sit on the board of governors motivate me. They have shaped the university into the institution it is today.
Q: If you could meet anyone in the world who would it be?
A: If I had the chance to meet anyone in the world, I would trade that opportunity so I could spend time with my grandfather, who was always my biggest champion. I would listen to his stories, tell him I have accomplished everything he hoped I would, and learn from the wisdom he no doubt would have wanted to share if he had been afforded more time.
Q: What do you enjoy about living in Northern Ontario?
A: I am a Sudbury girl and after spending some years in Ottawa, I felt the "pull" from the Big Nickel. Sudburians are hard-working, driven, loyal and most of all, open-hearted.
Q: What did you want to be when you grew up?
A: I had always hoped someone would pay me to be a life-long student. Working for an institution with a mission centred on learners is certainly the next best thing.
Q: What makes you happy?
A: My parents, Brian and Jo-Ann Kunto, to whom I am a success no matter what path I take in life; and my husband, Jeff McGarry, a wonderful partner in life and love, who reminds me everyday how lucky I am.
